Carson Wentz, Philadelphia Eagles’ offense hit new lows in loss to Seahawks – Philadelphia Eagles Blog

PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia Eagles entered Monday believing that they could get their offense on track against the Seattle Seahawks, who came in with the worst passing defense in the NFL.

Instead, the Eagles matched a season low in points for the third straight week in a 23-17 loss that dropped them to 3-7-1 on the season.

Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz finished 25-of-45 for 215 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. He averaged 1.8 yards per attempt in the first half, the fewest by any QB in a first half in the past three seasons, according to ESPN Stats & Information data.

Rookie Jalen Hurts saw an increase in first-team reps at quarterback during practice this week, sources said, and he played his first snap at QB on Monday, with Wentz on the sideline. It resulted in a short completion to wide receiver Alshon Jeffery. Hurts played two snaps on the night, as coach Doug Pederson gave his starter every opportunity to breathe life into the offense.

Wentz found some mojo late in the first half, using his legs to extend a drive that ended with a touchdown pass to tight end Dallas Goedert, but that burst was short-lived.

Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie recently reiterated to Pederson that it’s the coach’s decision to make personnel changes if he thinks that’s in the best interest of the team, a source said. That could be viewed as a green light of sorts if Pederson wants to make an adjustment at the team’s most important position. After Monday’s loss, the calls from the outside will only grow louder.

Pivotal play: The Eagles failed to convert on a pair of fourth-down tries in the fourth quarter. The first — a fourth-and-2 near midfield — resulted in a batted pass by linebacker K.J. Wright. Facing a fourth-and-4 from the Seahawks’ 15-yard line on the next possession, Wentz threw an interception in the end zone — his league-leading 15th pick of the season.

Eye-popping NFL Next Gen Stat: The Eagles finished with minus-4 yards in the first quarter. They were the first team this season with negative yards in the first quarter, and it marked the fewest yards by the Eagles in a first quarter in the past 20 seasons.

Troubling trend: Seahawks wide receiver DK Metcalf went off for 10 catches and 177 yards while being covered largely by cornerback Darius Slay. The Eagles traded for Slay this offseason to help repair the secondary and slow down receivers such as Metcalf, who burned them in January’s wild-card game to the tune of seven catches for 160 yards and a TD. The shutdown corner did not live up to his billing on Monday.
