Kim Jong Un himself ordered state TV to loosen up with rare typhoon broadcasts

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un ordered the unprecedented, overnight broadcasts aired during the country’s recent run-in with multiple typhoons, according to the director of the DPRK’s primary state-run television station.

Korean Central Television (KCTV) aired warnings, weather forecasts and even on-the-ground reports from areas affected by the storms overnight — well past the usual 10:30 p.m. signoff time. The TV station aired these around-the-clock broadcasts before and during the three typhoons that hit North Korea starting in late August.
