Rose Bay apartment record smashed by $1m with $11.25m Wintergarden penthouse sale

The penthouse in the exclusive Wintergarden apartment block at 614 New South Head Road, Rose Bay, has sold for $11.2m.

The Rose Bay apartment record has been smashed by $1m with the $11.25m sale of a trophy penthouse in the exclusive harbourfront complex Wintergarden.

Last night’s hush-hush off-market deal is the talk of buyers’ agents today after 1st City principals Julian Hasemer and Brad Caldwell-Eyles had three downsizers from well-established eastern suburbs families fighting over the four-bedroom apartment at 8/614 New South Head Road.

These are the same agents who broke the Rose Bay apartment record just last May with the $10.25m auction sale of the level one Wintergarden apartment of the late Bloch dancewear founder Betty Wilkenfeld to Bellevue Hill mansion owner Antoinette “Popsy” Albert.

This time, the sales duo are understood to have put the penthouse, home to Norman Wright and his wife Ban Hwa Yeap, to private tender.

No wonder there was so much enthusiasm — this is the north-facing penthouse with panoramic harbour views.

Beyond its grand foyer entrance, there are open-plan lounge and dining areas opening to a wraparound balcony with the magnificent outlook, a gourmet kitchen, marble bathrooms and floors, and a private wing of ensuite bedrooms.

The four-level complex, developed by the late Sid Londish, has become the favoured eastern suburbs downsizer home for the seriously wealthy, with property developer Roy Medich and venture capitalist John Grant among its residents.

Along with its stunning gardens, there’s a harbourfront pool retreat and direct beach access.

Having broken their own suburb apartment record, Hasemer and Caldwell-Eyles were uncharacteristically non-talkative about their achievement when contacted by the Wentworth Courier today, citing confidentiality clauses.

Apart from Rose Bay, the duo also hold the apartment record for Point Piper, Bellevue Hill, Darling Point and Vaucluse.

The beautiful common garden.

Hasemer capped off the top result with another big deal last night further along the harbourfront: the Point Piper apartment that property records show is owned by film producer Jamie Hilton.

The two-bedroom apartment with gun-barrel Bridge views and direct access to Seven Shillings Beach at 2D/4 Buckhurst Avenue sold for $2.5m, $100k above its $2.4m guide.

Among Hilton’s credits are Sleeping Beauty (2011); Breath (2017); The Waiting City (2009); and Other Life (2017).
