What are they saying?
Jurgen Klopp is not underestimating Saturday’s opponents, predicting Leeds will be well suited to the Premier League.
It’s not the most expansive style where they will open up, they are well drilled and the way they defend is exceptional – pretty much man-marking plus one.
They will face challenges because in the Premier League some different animals are around than in the Championship but they will do well in the Premier League. It suits them more than the Championship and now they can show their full potential.
It was largely taken as a given bearing in mind all the preparation work that had been done, but Marcelo Bielsa finally confirmed he will be head coach for their first season back in the Premier League.
I will be working next season with Leeds United. Everything has been sorted and it’s definite that I will be here next season.
Bielsa said his team will try to sustain their all-intensity approach to games this season and on Liverpool, he is well aware of the size of the task ahead.
They are one of the best teams in the world, with a fine system and very good players. It’s difficult to say how our players are going to adjust to the Premier League. We have prepared for this, but we need to show it on the pitch.
What are the best odds?
- Liverpool to win 2/7
- Draw 19/4
- Leeds United to win 10/1
What is our prediction?
Liverpool have won six and drawn one of their last seven league openers, with Watford in 2017 the only team to take a point off them in those games after Miguel Britos’ scrappy stoppage-time equaliser.
Leeds can boast three straight winning starts themselves but that was when they were plying their trade in the Championship and not making the trip to Anfield. Yet maybe playing the champions in the first game of the season, when they could catch them relatively cold, may not be a bad thing.
Leeds will want to leave their mark but Jurgen Klopp’s team will have too much class.
Liverpool 2 Leeds 1
